This is a joint meeting with Derby Railway Engineering Society (DRES)

From the discovery that the low rolling resistance of wheel on rail could enable the moving of heavy loads more easily, the need to provide motive power to the vehicles has been an area of much innovation. Starting with simple Manpower and that mysterious force of Gravity and moving through history to the latest experiments with Hydrogen Fuel Cells, this lecture is a brief illustration of the sources of energy and the conversion processes which enabled trains to become heavier and faster.
