Welcome to the North Herts Area from Your New Chairman

As the incoming Chair of the North Herts Area Committee, I am pleased at the extensive range of events that we have offered in the last year, covering a range of topics of relevance to mechanical engineers.  In 2016, we offered talks the boarding and alighting of trains, carbon capture technology as well as supporting the EMSTA annual Prestige Lecture on Crossrail.  At the Annual Dinner we offered a lecture on paper making.

In 2017 we are offering lectures on building information model (BIM) and safety systems in nuclear systems and at our Annual Dinner plan to offer a talk on an iconic building.  We are grateful for the time and effort that our presenters give in support of the institution, offering their expertise and experience for the benefit of our members.  The committee is currently establishing our programme for 2017-18 and aims to encompass a range of sectors, including; aerospace through our joint lecture with the Royal Aeronautical Society, rail and renewables.

As ever we continue to reply on the support of committee members and am delighted to be welcoming new members to the committee.  One of their first activities is to provide a stronger digital presence for the group establishing a linkedin group at https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13508625, which all members are welcome to join and enter the debate.

With the proposed invoking of Article 50 and the associated discussion of industrial plans, this provides an urgency for the engineering profession to contribute on the future development of UK industrial strategy.  We want to ensure that our members locally are well placed to contribute to this debate and shape the industrial landscape going forwards.

We would be delighted to hear from any members who are interested in contributing to the institution and debate in the region, so please don’t hesitate to contact me or any other committee members.

Yours,

Fiona Scott
