Cambridge University Library was founded over 600 years ago as a chest of manuscripts and is one of the oldest university libraries in the World. It is now home to nearly 10 million books, maps, manuscripts and more, housed on 130 miles of shelving. Maciej will explain how the digital content unit enables us all to view important items which, in many cases, are too fragile or simply too valuable to be put on permanent display. He will describe the various imaging equipment and the methods used to digitize historic documents from the likes of Newton, Darwin and many more. He will also talk about the wider role of engineering in preserving our heritage in the Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums sector (GLAM).

Maciej Pawlikowski is head of the Digital Content Unit at the Cambridge University Library, and an experienced digitisation manager within the research industry. The Digital Content Unit is a key part of Cambridge University Library. It has built up considerable expertise in providing imaging and licensing services for the Library’s collections and other photographic needs, having completed many digitisation projects over the years.
