Alan Denney, Specialist Consultant, will give a welding engineer’s history of steel offshore platforms in the North Sea.

This lecture will go through the history of fixed steel offshore platforms in the North Sea from the early days of the 1960s through the heady days of the 1970s and 1980s. It will trace the history of platform construction drawing on the developments in materials, welding, design concepts and installation methods.

Alan Denney is a welding engineer and metallurgist who worked in the John Brown Group of Companies for over 20 years and worked on design and construction of many of the big platforms, including Shell North Cormorant, BP Magnus, Total Alwyn, Statoil Statpipe platforms and many others. He also worked at Saipem on pipeline installation for nine years before retiring (nominally) in 2012.
