Description

The Flying Exploits of Sir Arthur Marshall

The Sir Arthur Marshall Lecture - Royal Aeronautical Society Cambridge Branch Prestige Event

This lecture will be presented by Group Captain Terry Holloway FRAeS RAF Ret’d, Managing Director, Cambridge AeroClub and Marshall Group Historian. There will be a reception following the lecture.

Sir Arthur Marshall learned to fly in the 1920s in a de Havilland Cirrus Moth, and in a 60 year period flew almost 5000 hours in 52 different aircraft types. Remarkably, he learned to fly jets at the age of 70, when lesser pilots had already given up flying, and he continued flying well into his 80s!

The speaker, Group Captain Terry Holloway, works at Marshall of Cambridge as Group Support Executive and as Executive Assistant for the Company Chairman, Sir Michael Marshall, and has worked at Marshal since leaving the Royal Air Force in 1995. He is an aircraft historian and speaker of some note, has been researching Sir Arthur’s remarkable flying career which will eventually appear as a book, if he doesn’t spend too much time lecturing on cruise ships.

In this talk, he will trace Sir Arthur’s extraordinary flying exploits in four distinct phases:

  • Pioneer pilot and adventurer in the 1920s.
  • Flying Instructor in the 1930s
  • Test Pilot in the 1940s
  • Business Pilot in the years following the second world war

A great deal is known about Sir Arthur’s huge successes in the aviation business, which is remembered in this annual named lecture, but very little is known about his exploits as a pilot, therefore we look forward to hearing what Terry, himself an accomplished pilot, has to tell us this evening.
