Description
Antarctica and the Moon are hostile environments in which significant sites and artefacts from human exploration and science are located. In Antarctica a system of legal protection has been established for heritage protection but heritage on the Moon remains beyond the control of Earth’s nations or organisations.

Right: Buzz Aldrin on the Moon (Neil Armstrong, NASA)
The announcement by Google of a Lunar XPRIZE for robots to go the Moon raised the issue of how to protect and conserve the Apollo sites and their artefacts. This lecture will review Antarctic heritage, and discuss the NASA guidelines – based on cultural, scientific and engineering requirements – for potential robotic visits to the Apollo sites. The talk will conclude with the question: what of Beagle 2 and Britain’s other space heritage?'
