Description

Wayne Thomas will talk about innovation in materials technology, with reference to the development of Friction Stir Welding.

Friction stir welding

The discovery/invention of Friction Stir Welding (FSW), was followed by a number of variants such as Skew stir™, Bobbin Stir™, Re-stir™, Com-stir™, Twin-stir™, Ras-stir™, Stir-lock™ Dual-rotation Stir™ and Pro-stir™. The use of carburising of refractory materials to increase the wear performance of the tool for welding steel was investigated. The investigation included the development of a hot friction coupling by the use of matching tapers. Investigations of weld integrity led to the development of a ‘through-hole’ impact test for the evaluation of root defects in FSW butt welds and “unrestrained bend” testing for lap joints. Other emergent technologies will be introduced by Wayne so as to explain a possible methodology for Discovery, Invention and Innovation of Materials Technology.
