TTP Ventus (www.ttpventus.com) is a high-tech manufacturing business based on Melbourn Science Park developing an innovative micropump.

TTP Ventus’ micropump platform, Disc Pump, was initially created to address a need in the micro fuel cell market but is now finding a wide range of other applications. In the medical and environmental monitoring markets, for example, device manufacturers are under pressure to deliver products that are portable, wearable, and/or disposable. Disc Pump helps to meet these demands, enabling products that would not be possible with conventional pump technology.

Disc Pump’s features include silent operation, ultra-smooth flow, millisecond response, small size, and light weight. These unique features derive from its operating principle. Rather than changing the volume of a chamber, Disc Pump excites a high-frequency acoustic standing wave in a fixed-volume cavity. Patented ultra-fast valve technology rectifies this standing wave to deliver pumped flow.

These innovations were recognised by the Institute of Physics through its inaugural Business Innovation Award in 2012. TTP Ventus won Business Weekly’s Disruptive Technology award in March 2018, recognising the impact of its revolutionary technology on the micropump industry and the product innovation that it is enabling for customers.

This talk will introduce Disc Pump technology, the manufacturing capabilities, and application examples. Following the talk there will be an opportunity for a smaller group (or groups) to view TTP Ventus’ manufacturing facility.
