Description

Geological Disposal; The Solution for Long-term Management of Higher Activity Radioactive Waste in England and Wales

The UK has a rich history of developing and using nuclear technologies, with the world's first full scale commercial nuclear power station opening at Calder Hall in the 1950s and multiple sites around the country providing significant contributions to the UK’s energy mix, with approximately 15% still provided by nuclear power.  This history has resulted in a substantial quantity of radioactive waste which requires long term management and with the UK strategy to increase the contribution from nuclear power to 25% by 2050, this requirement is even more pressing.  This talk will provide an overview of geological disposal, the process for siting a geological disposal and how Nuclear Waste Services works to ensure waste is packaged today to ensure it is suitable for geological disposal when available.

Dr David Nixon is a Senior Waste Management Specialist at Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), leading a team who carry out assessments of proposals for the packaging of high activity radioactive waste.  David has been at NWS for over 7 years, previously having worked as a materials scientist for Amec and as a hazardous and radioactive waste advisor for Grundon Waste Management.
