Description
What a waste! - The pros and cons of waste recycling and how to do it effectively
Join us at the Department of Engineering for a workshop and talk by Thaila Waste Management's education lead Jon Crisp.
Thalia Waste Management provides a complete waste management service for Cambridgeshire County Council. This includes recycling, composting and the treatment of ‘black bag’ waste, while delivering a range of waste services from their 300-acre Waste Management Park at Waterbeach – about three miles north of Cambridge. More than 300,000 tonnes of waste is processed at the Waste Management Park each year. Over half of this is composted or recycled.
Thalia operate nine recycling centres across the county and two waste transfer stations. They also provide services for trade customers including schools, Health and social care providers and local businesses.
Thalia's facilities include:
- Mechanical Biological Treatment plant for ‘black bag’ waste
- In-Vessel Composting facility. This turns biodegradable wastes into a high-quality soil improver
- Materials Recycling site to process mixed recyclables collected from households and businesses in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ('Recap').
There will be a hands on element to the evening where attendees will work together to identify and sort types of waste. Followed by a quiz and talk on the decomposition of waste and the advantages and disadvantages of recycling.
