The UK has the oldest railway system in the world. To build an electrification system around this historic infrastructure and at the same time comply with modern standards, legislation and health and safety regulations pose a massive engineering challenge. This challenge arises with the introduction of new trains and pantographs. One of the key challenges is the dynamics and gauge compatibility of the pantographs with legacy infrastructure. The presentation aims to address some of these challenges and present methods of assessment and risk mitigation measures for known factors.
