The digital transformation of the whole of the East Coast Mainline (ECML) is a key part of a national opportunity for modernisation of the UK rail network. The East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP) at circa £1.8bn is the first programme within this ECML transformation.

Gareth will speak to us about the challenges of undertaking fleet cascades within East Midlands Railway (EMR) under a pandemic, touching on some of the technical as well as practical difficulties. Examples across the Class 170, 180 and 360 fleets will be provided, whilst also touching on the impacts of the changing franchise contract landscape and how these events have changed the original EMR Fleet plan compared to what is current.

Safety critical functions of the engineered railway need to perform at high levels of integrity. Failure rate cannot be demonstrated through testing alone and these levels are currently reach with methods based on assumptions. New challenges are emerging like increasing network connectivity, automation and cyber security threats. The talk will discuss a different approach that aligns better with these challenges and the reality of the modern global supply chain.

This event is the annual IMechE competition for engineers in the earlier part of their
careers. Engineers have volunteered to present on a specific area of work or interest to a
judging panel and audience. The candidates will be given 10 minutes to present and
have 5 minutes after to answer questions from the audience.
