    Vivarail (born in 2015) has designed, built and had mainline certified its first 3-car diesel electric multiple unit (230001), the UK’s first battery-only EMU for 50 years (230002), a fleet of three 2-car DEMUs and is now in the middle of building a further five 3-car diesel-battery hybrid trains. Vivarail is also pushing ahead to develop a hydrogen fuel-cell variant, a battery train for the US market, and a fast-charging system which it hopes will become the new UK standard.

Engineers have volunteered to present on a specific area of work or interest to a judging panel and audience. The candidate will be given 10 minutes to present and have a few minutes after to answer questions from the audience.

    Professor Roger Goodall will provide insights into the challenges, opportunities and rewards of a control engineer. His lecture will start by looking back at some of the control system fundamentals and will continue by talking about some of the applications and key achievements that have marked his career including Maglev Trains, Tilting Trains, Active Suspension Systems, “Mechatronic” bogies, Sensing Systems for Aircraft and, most recently, an innovative Railway Track Switch.
