Description

What is Speak Out for Engineering?

Speak Out for Engineering is a competition designed to help young engineers develop verbal and visual communication skills.

Who can enter?

The competition is open to any Affiliate, Associate or Young Member of the Institution who has been professionally registered for ten years or less.

Presentation Details – Heat Round

The 2020 Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) heats have been moved to a virtual platform.  Competitors are to record their oral presentation on a mechanical engineering related subject in advance of the competition.  The question and answer session of the competition will be conducted live via MS teams (1st week in November, date TBC).

Presentation length: 20 mins

Question & Answer session: 10 mins

Judging Criteria

90% of the total marks are given for the quality of the presentation with only 10% for technical content. This ensures that whilst all presentations must have mechanical engineering content in its broadest sense (e.g. purpose, research, design, feasibility, and practicality), all presentations have the same chance of success despite varying degrees of technical content. Judges will expect more experienced competitors to have more developed presentation skills and their marking assessment will reflect this. The decision of the judges on the award of the prizes shall be final and no correspondence can be entered into.

Final Prizes

Four finalists will be selected from this heat to compete in the Regional SOFE Final (date TBC)

The finalist winners will receive:

  • 1st Prize: £300 and certificate

  • 2nd Prize: £200 and certificate

How to Enter

To take part, please email your video entry in an mp4 format to Michael Sobodu (glrymvcevents@imechenearyou.org) by 13th November 2020. Please include the title and a short summary of your presentation (200 words maximum). Failure to submit a summary may invalidate the entry. Note that the presentation must be made by an individual, even if the subject matter was developed as part of a group project.

Please also note that a winning entry in any year is not eligible for entry in subsequent years.
