    As the calendar ticks past August, it doesn’t mean summer is over just yet! On Sunday September 1st, come join the IMechE Greater London Region (GLR) Young Members Panel for their Summer Social at CRATE Brewery/Pizzeria on the canal at Hackney Wick. There will be drinks and pizza provided, for your entry of £5 (for any IMechE members attending the Young Trophy beforehand in Victoria Park, entry to the Summer Social is free!).     This talk, presented by former Railway Division Chair Cliff Perry MBE, will trace the influences on UK rail’s rise in the European safety league. Cliff will be drawing on his rich history in the UK rail industry to talk about how safety has been improved. All evenings start at 17:30 with tea, coffee and biscuits.Lectures commence at 18:00 for approximately one hour with questions afterwards.Refreshments are served after each lecture with an opportunity for networking and to meet the speaker

The Design Challenge gives first and second year undergraduates a taste of the ‘real world’ of engineering by challenging them to design, create, present and run a device to a strict technical specification.

    Professor William Powrie of Southampton University presents research from the £8.5m research programme: ‘Track to the Future’. The talk will discuss recent developments in understanding of railway track performance, and how these might be incorporated into design and practice. Topics covered will include reducing ballast settlement and the targeted maintenance of problem areas and isolated defects.
