Technical Presentation and Visit – 12th September 2022
A presentation and a site visit to the 100kW Ynni Ogwen community owned and operated hydro project situated on the river Ogwen near Bethesda in Snowdonia. Gareth Cemlyn Jones CEng FIMechE, Chairman of Ynni Ogwen, will host the visit.
The presentation will cover:
- Developing the Project, Community focus - social return on investment
- History of the site, Penrhyn Quarry
- Feasibility studies and licensing process
- Financing the project, share offer within the local community
- Design, build and commissioning – focus on upskilling local contractors
- Operational experience over 5 years – volunteer network, O&M
- How the community has benefited:
- Addressing fuel poverty, local Energy clubs, smart metering
- Establishing a mechanism to support further community projects
- Increasing environmental awareness, supporting sustainable and efficient use of energy
- Sharing knowledge, resources and experience across other community hydro projects in the locality
- Challenges and opportunities
This will be an EARLY EVENING visit, itinerary and parking arrangements to be confirmed.

17:00 Meet at Cefnfaes Community Hub, Bethesda
17:00 – 17:30 Refreshments provided. Light buffet
17:30 – 18:00 Presentations by Meleri Davies and Gareth Cemlyn Jones
18:15 Transport to the Hydro site
18:15 – 19:15 Tour of the site
19:15 Transport back to Cefnfaes

From A5, travelling from the A55 direction, turn left in Bethesda at Caffi Coed y Brenin. Sharp narrow road uphill. Turn left at the library and then take the first right. The centre is a large building on the left and has a car park at the rear.
