The Bangor Science Festival took place March 10 – 19 as part of the British Science week showcasing the latest in science, engineering and technology.
In conjunction with IET North Wales, we were invited to bring a stand along to the ‘Hidden Worlds’ interactive exhibition at the Brambell Natural Science building within Bangor University. This was an open day allowing the public to engage with Science activities and appreciate the type of work carried out by the University.
Both Institutions manned a stand promoting engineering with interactive engagement and literature on career opportunities. IET had their torch making activity whilst we used the Rubic cube solving robot. We also had the Stirling engine running throughout the day. The event started at 10 am and proved to be an extremely busy day, finishing at 4 pm. Of the over 1100 people who attended the Saturday event we estimate well over 400 young children showing an interest in science and engineering. There was a lot of interest from young people mainly age range 10 – 13, both boys and girls. The diversity of the science at this event means that there is something of interest for everyone and it was noted that many make it an annual visit from outlying towns and villages.
This was our first participation in this annual event. I think we should aim to be there next year but ensure we have at least 2 people on the stand as organising breaks and lunch proved tricky. Luckily between us and IET we had 3 people and coped in keeping both stands suitably manned at all times.
