Over the past 20 years, castings have been undergoing a revolution.  They are now the equal of forgings, but can continue their development to exceed all current forged and worked metals by a long way. Advances have been the result of developing methods of identifying the defects in cast metals, and devising techniques for eliminating the defects, resulting in the potential for defect free metals with astonishing properties.

Examples of inadequacies of current techniques will be discussed, in particular vacuum-arc refined steels, which have failed in 50 years to reduce defects to the expected levels, resulting in critical failures. The metals industry has to make big changes, but the changes will lower costs, benefit the environment, and finally deliver steels which give the desired level of performance and engender confidence.

Refreshments will be available from 18:30, lecture start at 19:00.
