Rail steel experiences wear and rolling contact fatigue, and can be costly to repair or replace. Additive manufacturing of premium rail materials could potentially increase the life of rails across the network. Laser cladding offers a method of in-situ application on targeted areas.

This talk will look at all of the four pathways identified within UK Government policy on heat decarbonisation, considering the pros and cons, along with the likelihood of success. In spite of having a dedicated heat policy since 2013, it has proven very difficult to gain traction to shift away from the use of natural gas. The longer that progress remains slow, the harder the task will be and we are reaching a point where significant decisions have to be taken.
