Over the past 20 years, castings have been undergoing a revolution. They are now the equal of forgings, but can continue their development to exceed all current forged and worked metals by a long way. Examples of inadequacies of current techniques will be discussed, in particular vacuum-arc refined steels, which have failed in 50 years to reduce defects to the expected levels, resulting in critical failures.
