Description

Join us for this joint IMechE South Yorkshire Area/Railway Division NE Centre talk about the life of former IMechE President Sir Nigel Gresley. The speaker will detail his life, his family and his progression as a railway engineer, culminating in his appointment as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London & North Eastern Railway in 1923, until his death in 1941.

One of Gresley’s most famous engines, the Mallard, was built in Doncaster and broke the record for the highest speed ever reached by a train in the UK of 125 mph. Gresley’s work during the First World War to reorganise the Doncaster plant works for the production of munitions was rewarded with a CBE in 1920.  He received a knighthood in 1937 and served on several Government appointed committees, including ones considering automatic train control and the electrification of railways.  He was President of the IMechE in 1935, and twice President of the Institution of Locomotive Engineers, in 1927-1928 and 1934-1935.

The presentation also includes moving film from this period.
