This lecture will explore the latest advances in railway traction technologies and their role in enabling a sustainable, efficient, and high-performance railway system. Professor Stuart Hillmansen will examine the evolution of traction systems beyond conventional electrification, focusing on emerging solutions that address decarbonisation, operational flexibility, and whole-system energy efficiency.

Key themes will include:

- The deployment of battery-electric multiple units and hybrid solutions.

- Advances in energy storage systems and their integration with rail operations.

- Progress in hydrogen fuel cell technologies and associated infrastructure challenges.

- The role of hydrogen and alternative fuels.

Stuart Hillmansen, Professor of Railway Traction Systems, University of Birmingham He leads on railway electrification, traction, and energy systems, focusing on whole-system approaches to decarbonisation. He works in the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education.
