The third event in this webinar series explores industrial cybersecurity from a system integrator’s perspective, aimed at system integrators, end users who engage with them, and all those involved across the cybersecurity lifecycle.

This webinar provides an overview of industrial cybersecurity from the viewpoint of a system integrator, increasing awareness of how cybersecurity considerations arise throughout the lifecycle of industrial projects. It focuses on the stages at which cybersecurity becomes relevant and the practical challenges encountered during real projects.

The session sets context around typical industrial process control systems, including PLCs, SCADA, DCS, I/O networks, and IT/OT integration, using example architectures to illustrate how such systems are structured. It overviews the key standards, regulations, and frameworks commonly referenced in industry, including IEC/ISA 62443, NIS/NIS2, the UK Cyber Assessment Framework, and the European Cyber Resilience Act and explains how these influence expectations placed on projects, organisations, and suppliers. In the UK, cyber resilience will form part of the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230, making it a mandatory requirement for all involved, from equipment suppliers to end-users.

A central theme is the system integrator’s role within the cybersecurity lifecycle and how responsibility is shared between asset owners, integrators, IT teams, and technology suppliers.

The webinar discusses the importance of understanding risk, tolerable risk, and risk management, referencing IEC 62443 approaches and showing how risk assessments underpin cybersecurity‑related decisions.

Particular attention is given to the quotation and tendering phase, where cybersecurity requirements are often absent, loosely defined, or limited to high‑level compliance statements.

The webinar explains how unclear scope, undefined responsibilities, and the absence of early risk assessment can lead to additional cost and delivery challenges and make it difficult to compare or normalise cybersecurity‑related costs between competing system integrators during the tendering process.

The latter stages focus on practical delivery challenges, including system installation and commissioning, integration with existing sites, and the impact of cybersecurity measures on testing, diagnostics, and fault‑finding activities. The webinar concludes by examining modifications to existing systems, patch management, and ongoing ownership, highlighting how cybersecurity expectations continue after handover and must be managed carefully to avoid introducing new risk while maintaining operability.

Attendance at the first two webinars in the series is not required; this session is fully self‑contained and designed to stand alone.

This Event has been organised and hosted by the Food and Drink Technical Activity  Committee (FDEC) of the IMechE  Process Industries Division and promoted across the Division, the Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions , the Aberdeen Area, the Teesside area, the, Western and the East Midlands Regions, all part of the Process Industries Community.
