As the UK accelerates its transition to a low-carbon energy system, ensuring a stable and reliable electricity supply is becoming increasingly challenging due to the variable nature of renewable sources such as wind and solar. Power systems are therefore facing growing demands for flexibility to balance supply and demand, maintain grid stability, and ensure secure electricity supply during periods of low renewable generation.
Energy storage is widely recognised as a key solution to these challenges. While many recent installations focus on short-duration storage technologies such as batteries, long-duration energy storage solutions are also required to support power systems over extended periods.
In this webinar, participants will be introduced to isothermal compressed air energy storage (ICAES), a technology capable of storing energy for long periods and releasing it when required. The session will outline the thermodynamic fundamentals of ICAES, key system architectures, and important design considerations including compression, heat management, and air storage. Operational examples and recent developments will also be discussed, highlighting its potential role in grid balancing, renewable integration, and long-duration energy storage in modern power systems.
Webinar Plan
- Introduction of speaker by chair (5 mins)
- Talk on Compressed Air Energy Storage (45 min)
- Q and A session (10 mins) - The speaker and panel will take your questions from the chat and answer them at the end of the session
This Event has been organised by the Working Group of the Process Industries Division of the IMechE. It is hosted by the Process Industries Division and promoted across the Process Industries Community, which includes the Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions, the Aberdeen Area, the Midland area and the North East area.
