    As part of the 'Great Northern Engineering Experience', this lecture will review the early engineering solutions to joint replacement and trace the development of more recent designs as materials and scientific understanding of lubrication mechanisms have matured. It will look at the scientific basis underlying the working of artificial joints whilst explaining attempts to make joints last longer at a time when patients have increasing expectations of their performance
