Donald Julius Groen Prize Lecture. The WheelRail Interface and Complex Tribology of an Open System

The wheel/rail interface is one of the most complex interfaces tribologists have to deal with. It is an open system with constantly varying contact forces and slip. This means that it presents a wide range of behaviours in terms of friction and wear which at their extremes can compromise train safety. It also means that replicating the behaviour in the laboratory and predicting its behaviour is very difficult. This talk covers work carried out and ongoing to create small-scale experiments to understand fundamental mechanisms; development of modelling tools and applied solutions to for a range of wheel/rail interface issues. The work is focused on low adhesion; wear and rolling contact fatigue and rail grinding case studies.

Martin Gambling Martin received his degree in automotive engineering from Loughborough University in 1997, specialising in non-linear impact simulation of Formula 1 structures for his thesis. He has worked entirely in the field of computer aided engineering, developing specialisms in non-linear analysis and the application and development of design optimisation methods. Having begun his career at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA), Martin has worked in the automotive industry for 25 years, developing and applying optimisation methods throughout this time. In 2003, Martin founded GRM Consulting; a CAE based consultancy developing and providing design optimisation software and services to the engineering community. In his role at GRM, a key motivator for him has been to see the continued adoption of optimisation methods to drive design.

Datacenter Cooling Focus on HPC

The UK is ranked third in terms of global data centre installations by energy use and UK data centre energy requirements are roughly equivalent to the total output of two nuclear power plants. As such, the industry is also a major producer of greenhouse gases and energy costs are a significant issue for data centres. The possibilities of using natural ventilation cooling to maintain required process conditions for current electronics mean a revolution in thinking about cooling, analogous to the Passivhaus revolution in building construction. In their search for free cooling, some large data centres are moving to cold climates; for example Facebook is planning a new centre in northern Sweden, highlighting how much of an issue this has become. Will this take another industry away from the UK or can we find alternative cooling systems that compete? At this event, key industry figures from ASHRAE, Hitachi and EcoCooling introduce and evaluate current changes in cooling strategy and implementation. A major focus of the event will be analysing the development and optimisation of natural ventilation, and the technology available, over the past decade.
