Impact of Rising Sea Levels on Construction and Engineering Infrastructure and Process Plant Install

Listen to this recording to hear insights on the effects of rising sea levels on installations from Francis Mills, Chair of the Institution's Construction & Building Services Division, Tim Fox, Chair of the Institution's Process Division and John Englander, President of the International Sea Level Institute. Over the course of this webinar, these three contributors will address how rising sea levels are being measured and monitored, and what engineers can do to mitigate their impact. Scientists forecast that sea levels will be at least one meter higher within 30 years, with many estimates placing this far higher. It is therefore important to plan for how to protect coastal infrastructure and developments which will be at risk of flooding and other associated damage. Net Zero Hospitals

The UK has committed to a future economy based on lowered carbon targets, reaching a target of 100% total carbon reduction by 2050, i.e. across all carbon production including energy usage in buildings, including hospitals. All buildings including hospitals must therefore become "Net Zero" and even positive contributors toward the current UK carbon targets. This means not only new hospitals – which already have to be net zero to meet Building Regulations and the NHS Encode target in HTM 07 – but also existing hospitals which may currently have very high emissions. This webinar will give an introduction to the implications of these new targets and will go into the research that has gone into appropriate strategies to meet them. It will give an overview of what needs to be done to meet the targets and how to carry this out. Research has shown that massive reductions are possible and that with the appropriate strategies there can be cost benefits which would help to ease the financial pressures on the NHS. This webinar will cover this research and show how by embracing low carbon energy as a resource and a value to the community, hospitals could start to see an income stream from their waste and also improve health in their community, whilst achieving the Net Zero target.

Tesco engineering energy-efficient stores

Mark Hawker, IMechE Fellow and Head of Engineering Design for Tesco Property Services, discusses the construction and operation of their energy-efficient sustainable concept store. Using new technologies and construction methods, engineers have radically reduced the store's energy consumption and achieved a 43% reduction in its carbon footprint. They are now well on course to reducing their energy consumption by 50% between 2000 and 2010.

4th Teesside Area Tech Talk: Net Zero, Real One's

In this fourth Teesside Tech Talk, hosted by members of the IMechE's Teessside Area Panel and the Institution of Power Engineers (IPowerE), engineers will hear about two large scale net zero projects being developed on Teesside. David Few, Project Director, Innogy will give a talk on the 1.4 gigawatt (GW) Sofia Offshore Wind Farm sited on Dogger Bank, which will connect to the National Grid in Teesside and is the largest renewable project in the North East of England. Then Colin McGill, Project Director, Net Zero Teesside will give a talk on NZT’s Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) project, based in Teesside in the North East of England. In partnership with local industry and with committed, world class partners, it aims to decarbonise a cluster of carbon-intensive businesses by as early as 2030.
