Designed for safe transport and storage

Nuclear transport flasks are used to store and transport nuclear waste material. To be transported within nuclear licenced sites, the flask design must fulfil specific safety requirements taken from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regulations for safe transport of radioactive material. This is to ensure that release of radionuclides is not credible. This presentation demonstrates a typical analysis driven design process undertaken to fulfil these requirements. Thermal transient, structural, and impact assessments were required to demonstrate that the nuclear flask design provided sufficient structural integrity when subjected to these requirements with bulk containment of its contents maintained.
