Calling All Asset Integrity Leaders

The Process Industries Division of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) is assembling a cross-industry team to drive improvements in safety, production efficiency, and cost reduction across the onshore chemicals, petrochemicals, and refining sectors.

In today’s demanding economic climate, onshore chemical and refining operators face intense pressure from soaring energy costs, disrupted supply chains, global competition and shrinking profit margins, exacerbated by skilled workforce shortages and ageing infrastructure. Additionally, we’ve observed increasing fragmentation in previously integrated industrial hubs.

As a result of the above challenges, the industry continues to face critical issues, including:

  • Frequent, costly, and unplanned equipment failures
  • Over 80% of process vessel inspections still relying on traditional inspection and NDT methods, requiring confined space entry
  • Limited adoption of focused inspection strategies such as Risk-Based Inspection (RBI)
  • Underutilisation of advanced inspection technologies and artificial intelligence

To address these challenges, the upcoming webinar will bring together industry leaders, consultants, and regulatory experts to examine the case for change, identify barriers and risks, and explore opportunities to improve the implementation of Asset Integrity Management.

This event will also serve as the launchpad for a Joint Industry Project (JIP), aimed at:

  • Clearly articulating the current challenges and emerging opportunities for the process industries
  • Identifying and addressing competency gaps in asset integrity practices
  • Defining the industry value gap where improvement is possible
  • Developing practical guidelines to elevate operator performance in asset integrity

 Webinar Plan

  • Overview of project initiative / the competency, mindset and technological changes required   (A D’Ambrogio, IMechE / TUV Rheinland)
  • Required Process Safety Focus (Richard Hellebrand, IMechE)
  • Regulator Priorities and Observations (David Glass, IMechE / HSE)
  • Lesson from Upstream (Harry Moss, IMechE)
  • Power of Artificial Intelligence to transform Asset Integrity (Jonny Low, Scope)
  • Safety and Reliability focus (Jon Wiggins, IMechE/DEKRA
  • Call for action and next steps.  (A D’Ambrogio, IMechE / TÜV Rheinland)

This Event has been organised by the Process Industries Division of the IMechE, supported by the Safety and Reliability and Pressure Systems Groups. It is hosted by the Process Industries Division and promoted across the Process Industries Community, which includes Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions, the Aberdeen Area, the Midland area and the North East area.
