Who Are We?
The South Cumbria Young Members Panel is made of a group of young engineers from South Cumbria who aim to aid the development of Young Members in the area (including ourselves!), promote the engineering profession and support local schools and colleges in encouraging students into STEM careers.
What Do We Do?
The panel works on running or contributing to a diverse range of projects to support our aims, some run by ourselves and others run in collaboration with other organisations within the local area. These events can be roughly broken down into the following sections:
Industrial Visits
The panel often attends / organises industrial visits to engineering companies of interest to our members.
Educational (STEM) events
A major focus of the panel is contributing to the promotion of STEM in the local area. The panel both attends well established events (such as the annual South Cumbria Big Bang fair) and runs its own STEM initiatives. The involvement of panel members ranges from Project Lead positions for major events to simply helping out on the day.
Talks / Lectures
The organisation and running of interesting lectures on engineering related subjects in South Cumbria is performed by the South Cumbria Area Panel and a range of other professional bodies (PESC, RINA, IET etc), however we occasionally run talks that are particularly relevant to Young Members to supplement this calendar of events.
Socials
In addition to the official panel events we have an active social calendar (thanks to our excellent Social Sec. Aly) involving everything from Karting to a simple beer and a burger at the local pub!
Get Involved, Make a Difference!
We are always looking for new members so if you would like to get involved or just get some more information on the panel don't hesitate to get in touch, either come to one of our committee meetings or contact one of our committee members.
We constantly strive to improve the contribution we make to the development of our members and our input to educational initiatives so if there is something you would like to see from the panel, or an idea for an event you would like to get support for come along and let us know!
The level of involvement in the panel is totally up to each member and comes down to the amount of time and effort you want to contribute, no one will pressure you into doing more than you want to! So whether you want to really develop some of those hard to reach competencies by taking up a Project Lead role or just want to be added to the mailing list to hear about upcoming social events get in touch!
