Description

Irish Salt Mining has been mining rock salt at Kilroot since 1965. In its first year of operation the mine produced 14,500 tonnes, rising to half a million tonnes per annum currently.

The rock salt is used for de-icing. It is crushed and screened underground before being transported to the surface where it is stored and treated with an anti-caking additive.

The visit will include a tour underground in Land Rovers to see the mining operation and processing

Hard hats complete with lights and hi-viz jackets will be supplied by the mine however, visitors are advised to bring their own walking shoes / boots. The temperature in the mine is 16degC and conditions are dusty so appropriate clothing should be worn.

Numbers are strictly limited on this visit.

Booking through this website is essential.
