Description

"Aerospace Manufacturing"
Colm’s presentation will begin with a brief history of 50 years of the NITC before discussing the pioneering applied research, development and innovation (RD&I) projects in Aerospace Manufacturing. Key technology themes covered in the presentation include Digital manufacturing, Parallel Kinematic Machines and Automated Shim-less Assembly, before concluding with the recent development of a £7.5M state of the art Manufacturing Technology Factory.

The audience will be presented with case studies on how 3D factory simulation supported local aerospace companies with planning and preparing large factory investment business cases, highlighted with the design and simulation of Bombardier’s new C-Series/A220 wing manufacturing facility. This will be followed by an introduction to PKM technology with a case study on how the preparation of a wing root end interface supported the first shim-less wing/wing box assembly by Airbus, and an overview of current PKM activities.  The presentation will conclude with the journey of an exemplar KTP cluster of local aerospace SME’s and the NITC collaborating together led to the SCENIC investment which has encouraged QUB to invest in the latest chapter of the NITC through a major capital facelift and creation of an exciting new Manufacturing Technology Factory for Northern Ireland.

Refreshments will be available from 6pm with the main proceedings commencing at 6:30pm.
