Robotic Sensing - A Vision of the Future

Sonya Coleman, Professor of Vision Systems at Ulster University
presents her Inaugural Professorial Lecture as part of the Civic Lecture Series

Computer vision plays a central role in robotics, giving robots the ability to “see” and carry out tasks using visual information. Techniques are often based on mathematical methods or, more recently, use knowledge and characteristics of the human visual system. In concert with vision, humans use touch when exploring and interacting with the world around them. Just as for humans, it is important for robots not only to understand visual characteristics such as the shape and size of objects that they encounter, but also to be able to assess their weight or texture. In this talk we will explore a range of approaches to image and tactile processing and their applications to empowering robots with sensing capabilities similar to humans.
