High Speed 2 Presentation
With the cancellation of HS2 from Lichfield to Manchester, there is now no strategy to increase rail capacity north of London.  David Shirres will explain the transformational benefits that have been lost as a result.  These HS2 benefits, which were to include a huge increase in local, long-distance and freight rail services, would have been transformational in respect of the UK economy and transport decarbonisation.  David will also explain the nature of HS2’s costs and how the best use can be made from what remains of HS2.

David Shirres, Retired Engineer
David is a retired railway engineer who is Editor of Rail Engineer magazine and Secretary of the IMechE’s Railway Division in Scotland.  He was an engineering volunteer on the Paddle Steamer Waverley from 2009 until 2016 during which time he produced a technical guide to the ship.
