This Event has been organised by the Decarbonising Heating and Cooling Working Group from the IMechE Food and Drink Committee in partnership with the Transport, Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration (TICR) project. This is hosted by Process Industries Division and promoted across the Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions and, the Aberdeen Area, all part of the Process Industries Community.

The food and drink sector is a vital part of the UK economy and is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK, comprising of 17% of the total turnover of all UK manufacturing activity in 2021. Thermal processes account for the majority of energy use in the sector. Most of the focus has been on decarbonising heating in the industry, but cooling and refrigeration also play a major role on greenhouse gas emissions. Refrigeration is used to extract heat from products to chill or freeze them. Once heat is extracted from the food, the refrigeration system energy is lower as there is only a requirement to maintain the food at the correct temperature to ensure its quality and safety.

The refrigeration emissions come both from direct refrigerant leakage and indirect energy use. A research project funded by the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero is investigating real energy use and greenhouse gas emissions from various sectors that use refrigeration for cooling processes. The Transport, Industrial and Commercial Refrigeration (TICR) project will also identify innovation and policy levers to facilitate sector-wide decarbonisation to achieve net zero cooling emissions.

This IMechE event will present the initial results of the TICR project on the emissions from refrigeration in the Food and Drink sector and will share the findings from ten sites surveys carried out recently.

A panel of Engineers from different process disciplines and backgrounds will explore the emissions reduction opportunities and challenges of net zero industrial refrigeration in food and drink manufacturing. The panel will take your questions from the audience and explore how Engineers and other professionals may work together and actively contribute towards climate neutrality.
