This Event has been organised by the Adaptation Working Group of the Process Industries Division of the IMechE in collaboration with the Clean Cooling Network. It is hosted by Process Industries Division and promoted across the Centres in the North West and Yorkshire Regions, the Aberdeen Area, the North East area, all part of the Process Industries Community.

Following the highly successful launch of 'The Hot Reality: Living in a +50°C World' at the IMechE’s London headquarters, in collaboration with the Clean Cooling Network this COP29 focussed webinar invites you to join Dr Tim Fox (lead author) to explore the report. The continued increase globally in seasonal temperatures and the severity and frequency of heatwaves will severely impact all liveable aspects of life on Earth. Tim will highlight how critical cooling infrastructure is at the core of many of the viable solutions needed to ensure our ability to survive and thrive in these new conditions, as well as the role engineering will play in ensuring a successful outcome for humanity.

For adaptation to be effective and a resilient outcome envisaged for humanity, the consequences for a world without cooling as critical infrastructure needs to be fully understood: food insecurity, ineffective health systems, overheating buildings, failing digital technology; lost workplace output and economic productivity; increased migration, and exacerbated disparities and divides. Tim will discuss these consequences along with the central role of Clean Cooling in helping to tackle them. A concept developed by the Centre for Sustainable Cooling at Birmingham University, Clean cooling aims to deliver equitable, resilient and future proofed cooling infrastructure, considering global goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, climate change mitigation and sustainable development. It takes a holistic systems level approach to implementing infrastructure considering accessibility, affordability, financial sustainability, scalability, skills, training, safety, and reliability, to help deliver societal, economic, and health goals.
