This will be an event with information, discussion and ideas-sharing for you to apply in your work. It will reflect on a series of webinars since 2021 that have covered the concepts of process safety management and why they are important to mechanical engineers. We will also discuss the importance of helping humans to be reliable in safety-critical critical tasks, professional engineering ethics and the need to speak up, and how the series’ legacy could be best used by future engineers.

Thermal processes account for the majority of energy use in the food and drink sector. Main focus has been on decarbonising heating, but cooling and refrigeration also play a major role on greenhouse gas emissions due to both direct refrigerant leakage and indirect energy use. Achieving net zero refrigeration in food and drink manufacturing will require understanding of what the emissions currently are, how to reduce those emissions and what innovation and policy levers can support this.
