This talk will focus on two aspects of ongoing biomedical engineering research into diagnostic sensing that seeks to 'listen' and 'feel' (palpating) structures (i.e. human organs) to assess their condition. The speaker will describe the underlying research in materials engineering and medical device manufacture before presenting two examples of near-commercial applications of (1) acoustic emission sensing and (2) dynamic instrumented palpation.

Vibration-based condition monitoring (VCM) is well-known tool to identify the detect in any machines. This information is then used to plan condition-based maintenance process to rectify the defect before any failure. In many cases, the same defect reoccurs frequently and the VCM often fails to provide root cause for such frequent re-occurrences. A few such industrial machine problems solved by the operational deflection shape (ODS) analysis will be discussed during the presentation.
