Although heavy duty internal combustion engines (ICEs) will continue for many years to play an important role in the transition to net zero carbon dioxide, major ICE manufacturers continue to pursue policies of small incremental upgrades to the existing 4-stroke engine technology to address near term challenges, even when faced with the longer term existential threat of hybridization costs, necessary for significant emission and fuel consumption reduction.
Additionally, the perceived wisdom approach of manufacturing multiple engine specifications for so called provide “agnostic” combustion systems for various emerging fuels will significantly increase product costs by parts count proliferation and added complexity.
This presentation suggests two emerging, robust and compelling ICE technology opportunities to enable significant capital investment savings and product cost reductions; these technologies would partially offset power unit piece cost and capital costs of hybridization for multiple engine platforms. The same two technologies would provide improved flexible multi-fuel operation which will be necessary for ICE survival.
