Since their invention in the late nineteenth century, internal combustion engine brake thermal efficiency has increased by incremental steps to 43-50% of the fuel energy depending on type and application. Has a plateau been reached where increased efficiency is not cost effective? The future possibilities for improved peak thermal efficiency are reviewed, including the adoption of alternative gas exchange and combustion cycles.
