Global car ownership has now reached one billion and is expected to continue to rise, some estimates putting this at two billion cars within a few decades. For the first time in our history more than half the world’s population is now living in urban environments - and it is estimated that this will increase to two in three people by 2040. These trends present huge social, environmental and economic implications. If we are to be able to sustain these trends then what are some of the implications for the car? Could driverless cars be one of them? How near are we to having driverless vehicles on our roads? What would the advantages be?
