The safety bicycle is a the most familiar human powered vehicle, whose design has remained fundamentally unchanged for the past 100 years. However, there is also a rich history of alternative approaches to harnessing human power on wheels. This presentation will explore some of the fundamental limitations of human power and trace the history of various vehicle designs. It will conclude by looking forward to the possibilities offered by contemporary HPVs and what the future may hold.
