Description
We are delighted to invite you to our ‘Genesis of a Queen: Queen Mary 2’ talk.
We also welcome the Ocean Liner Society (OLS) members to tonight’s talk, this is our first event that we have organised in partnership with the OLS, and we hope to continue this partnership for future events.
This talk describes why and how Cunard’s current flagship, Queen Mary 2 (QM2) was built, and explores some of the many design considerations and challenges that had to be evaluated and resolved by her design team, led by our speaker Stephen Payne.
Our Speaker Tonight, Stephen is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and RINA. He is a Chartered Engineer and was awarded the OBE in 2004 for Services to Shipping. He has also been awarded the distinction of Royal Designer of Industry and is a recipient of the Merchant Navy Medal; Stephen is also a Freeman of the City of London.
QM2 replaced the ageing Queen Elizabeth 2, which had been the Cunard flagship from 1969 to 2004, and the last major ocean liner built before Queen Mary 2.
