The Future of Rail presentation competition South East Heat. Young member finalists present their work and compete to represent the South East at the National Final at IMechE HQ.
The Rail Division Chair, Iain Rae, will also being doing an abridged version of his Chair's Address for the South East Centre.

This presentation suggests two emerging, robust and compelling ICE technology opportunities to enable significant capital investment savings and product cost reductions; these technologies would partially offset power unit piece cost and capital costs of hybridization for multiple engine platforms. The same two technologies would provide improved flexible multi-fuel operation which will be necessary for ICE survival.

As the railways face a need to eventually replace diesel rolling stock and demonstrate environmental sustainability, we aim to highlight the opportunities and challenges of developing a hydrogen train as a viable solution. This presentation will cover the considerations for the right technical solutions, safe integration, what may need to happen to make it a reality, and the scope and force of standards for hydrogen for rail.
