Welcome to the Wessex Region

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is closely monitoring the COVID-19 outbreak and following UK Government advice to restrict social interaction and movement in public areas, we have taken the decision to adjourn all our Regional, Area and Annual General Meetings for 2020.

As a result, the current elected members will carry on in their elected positions until the AGM is held at a later date.

The IMechE Wessex Region will contact you soon with more details on the evolving situation.

This site will provide information on events and activities being organised by the IMechE
Wessex Region.  Please visit the Events section and I hope you find something of interest in your area. Should you need any further information please
contact us

Welcome to the Events and Contacts pages on Near You for the Wessex Region.  Our Region covers activities organised by volunteer members in the Bournemouth, Dorchester & Weymouth, Portsmouth & Isle of Wight, Salisbury and Southampton Areas where some 4000 members reside and/or work. If you have time to devote to volunteering please contact your local Area committee and get involved.  Even if you are too busy to volunteer, we would always be grateful for ideas for lectures, luncheon clubs, young member or schools activity and visits in your area.

I've just about completed my first year as Regional Chair, which involves taking part in the Regional Strategy Board and IMechE Council affairs.  This past year has been very challenging for the IMechE with the Special Meeting kicking off some fairly major resignations.  I've tried to make sure that the IMechE remains relevant to the Region and its members. These are difficult times for all Professional Engineering Institutions. Yet Professional Registration and Continual Professional Development are still hot topics amongst Engineers.

I want to develop the 'Primary Engineer' STEM-style activity in the Region as a method for those of us who are 'STEM shy' to get involved with a minimum of impact to your spare time - it is a super-rewarding way helping children and their teachers understand what Engineering is all about.

The Arnold Barks Memorial Christmas Lecture(s) for schools and members continues to be a highlight for the Region.  In Dec 2018 we were delighted to have Richard Browning and his Jet Suit demonstrate with a flight around Salisbury Cathedral grounds. Many of you may have seen me on the TV coverage of the event! Autographs given freely!

The University Design Challenge is nearing the finals as I write (Mar 19).

You should receive monthly reminders from the IMechE's Near You Regional Update service, detailing the Region's activities. If the events look a bit thin, or not in your 'sphere', then grab the opportunity and offer a lecture up about what you do!  It's easy!

I would like to thank all the volunteers in the Region and Areas for their hard work as without their efforts and commitment, the delivery of the events in the Region would not be possible.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to the workings of the IMechE’s Support Network.  This is a separate charity which seeks to support members and their dependents in times of need.  More details may be found by following the link:
