The Dorchester and Weymouth Area of the Wessex Region of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers covers the post code zones DT1 - DT9. This embraces Blandford, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Gillingham, Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport and Lyme Regis.
Most of the Area is regarded as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) with geographical interest associated with the Jurassic Coast world heritage site. In 2012 Weymouth & Portland hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events.
The Dorchester and Weymouth Area Committee endeavours to engage with the interests of our membership and local community. To this end we aim to offer interesting and inciteful lectures and industry visits each year.
Along with those we organise, we offer events in collaboration with the other Wessex Area committees. We are always open to host relevant lectures jointly with other like-minded institutions. We believe our members and visitors enjoy the talks and visits that are held on a wide range of subject matter, helping to promote a general interest in engineering and applied science.
In addition to our lecture and visit programmes, we work actively with many local schools promoting STEM activates to students. These activities include support during British Science Week, visits to science centres and project work.
But together we will look to evolve the area in whatever way we want - social, education, support, networking, training etc.
The Area committee aims to meet four times a year – usually in person. Institution members are invited to attend and details can be obtained from any of the committee members.
The Area thrives on the enthusiasm and support given to it by its members (both committee and non-committee) in suggesting, managing, supporting and reporting back on relevant events and activities and I look forward to hearing your opinions on how we can propose a full and interesting calendar for the upcoming year.
