Welcome to the Dorchester and Weymouth Area

The Dorchester and Weymouth Area of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers covers the post code zones DT1 - DT9.  This embraces Blandford, Shaftesbury, Sherborne, Sturminster Newton, Gillingham, Dorchester, Weymouth, Bridport and Lyme Regis.

Unfortunately, today there are very few large industries within the Area.  However, the Area does have a very diverse spectrum of industries within what is chiefly a rural environment.  However, Dorchester and Weymouth are in an area of outstanding natural beauty with geographical interest associated with the Jurassic Coast world heritage site.  In 2012 Weymouth & Portland hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Sailing events, the legacy of which still continues by promoting and hosting world championship sailing events.

Because of the areas outstanding natural beauty many engineers tend to move into the area during retirement bringing with them a wide diversity of experience and wealth of interests which is evident in those attending our regular lectures, talks and visits.

The institutes values are;-

     ● Professionalism                  ● Respect for people and the environment
     ● Integrity                              ● Innovation
     ● High ethical standards

With four key themes;-

     ● Education                          ● Manufacturing
     ● Energy                              ● Transport Environment

The Dorchester and Weymouth Area Committee endeavours to engage with the interests of our membership and local community, and to these ends we offer a total of six lectures and at least one visit a year focusing on the five key themes in a combined programme with the Dorset & South Wiltshire branch of the Institution of Engineering Technology (IET).  Lectures are held at Weymouth College, Cranford Avenue site and visitors are always welcome to attend.  We believe our members and visitors enjoy the talks and visits which are held on a wide ranging subject matter helping to promote a general interest in engineering and applied science.

On the 6th July 2016 we organised a visit to the RNLI's manufacturing facility for the Shanon Class lifeboat in Poole.  The event was well attended by members and non-members with all 24 tickets being reserved.  The guided tour was organised as a follow up to a lecture by the RNLI in June on the Shanon class lifeboat held at Weymouth college.

In addition to our lecture and visit programmes, we work actively with many local schools and colleges promoting STEM activates to students through the tireless efforts of our Schools Liaison Officer.  These activities include visits to science centres, project work and competition such as the IMechE’s Formula Student.

In 2014 the Dorchester and Weymouth Area committee managed to secure funding from the Institutions Educational Advisory Group (EAG) for a much needed and sort after 3D Printer to be used by pupils at Weymouth’s Budmouth College.  The new 3D printer ‘MakerBot’, which can print functional 3D parts in plastic of any shape and is only limited by size, is inspiring the next generation of designers and engineers in after schools clubs at Budmouth College.
At the Wessex Region Engineering Excellence Awards & Annual Dinner in 2015 the Dorchester and Weymouth Area were well represented (see photo below) .   We were extremely pleased that the relentless efforts over the last 25 years of our School Liaison Officer, Steve Stubbing, (second from the left) were recognised by the Wessex Region who awarded him Volunteer of the Year 2015.  Congratulations Steve from us all, the award is well deserved.
Engineering Excellence Awards & Annual Dinner - Dorchester and Weymouth Committee

The Area committee meets four times a year in Dorchester, at the Trumpet Major Inn.  Institution members are invited to attend and details can be obtained from any of the committee members.

Our next committee meeting is on Thursday 6th September 2018 at 6pm.  We are always looking for additional volunteer committee members, particularly young members, so why not come along and have a chat with no commitment and see for yourself what is involved.
