Your Institution Needs Your Help!

After a difficult year the IMechE Southampton Area Committee needs your support and is looking for volunteers to step forward to help us run our local branch.

Our profession has never been more challenging or exciting, from working on zero carbon initiatives to finding a way to switch from nuclear fission to nuclear fusion or winning the next America's Cup.

We need your ideas and help to connect with the world's best engineers and storytellers.

You could be helping organise interesting and insightful talks about mechanical engineering and flagship projects. As well as talks, we have a history of eye-opening visits to local factories and scientific facilities, and though in-person visits may be logistically challenging, we have just had a two hour virtual tour of the Diamond Light Source at Harwell, courtesy of our Nuclear colleagues, which was brilliant. With online communications developing rapidly, it could not be easier and we can invite speakers from across the world.

We have a long standing strong connection with local universities and their students, who are studying hard but perhaps unaware of the wide range of hugely exciting things we do in the Southampton area. We need to pass on that excitement, and open their eyes to the possibilities which await them.

In non-COVID times the committee typically meets 3 times a year in the Southampton area. Currently meeting are conducted via Teams or Zoom. The committee need new members to join in with the long serving core membership and be more involved in planning activities for the local area. If you are interested in joining the committee please email sthmptonchair@imechenearyou.org to express your interest, we’d love to hear from you.

There are plenty of benefits to volunteering on your local committee, some of which we’ve outlined below.

Benefits to being on the committee:

  • An opportunity to gain an even broader perspective on mechanical engineering and the Institution.
  • Enhance your strategic knowledge and skills.
  • Broaden your network of contacts.
  • Help demonstrate competences of UK Spec for professional development / CPD.
  • A boost to your CV.
  • Generate interest in the profession among high levels of student membership in the region.
  • Opportunity to meet and socialise with like-minded enthusiastic engineers in the area.

Things we're looking for:

  • Fresh ideas, enthusiasm and a renewed energy.
  • People who can help find and organise interesting talks and guests.
  • A couple of hours a month of your time.

Some previous highlight lectures/events in the Area:

  • Fawley Refinery Visit.
  • MV Queen Elizabeth Visit.
  • Williams F1 Hybrid Power.
  • SABRE Rocket Engine.
  • Siemens Train Care Depot Visit.
  • Boaty McBoatface & Marine Robotics.
  • TokomaK Energy Fusion.

Kind Regards,
