Description

AGM & Technical Lecture: Offshore Wind Projects – Putting a Value on Risk

Offshore wind is now established as the cheapest route to deploy large-scale low-carbon power generation in the UK and the sector is delivering some of the largest infrastructure projects in the country, with values upwards of £2 billion.  Costs are falling rapidly as the sector and supporting technologies scale up. However, things can still go wrong and typical delay costs of over £250K a day can quickly put a serious dent in tight contingency levels.

This talk will cover the main ‘building blocks’ of an offshore wind project, with examples of risks faced, potential impacts and techniques used to “put a value” on construction risk.

The speaker, Dr Alistair Bird, is an advisory consultant working with projects, investors and lenders who look for an independent and informed perspective on risk.  His conviction that managing risk is at the core of successful project delivery has been forged over 30 years, by an eclectic mix of energy projects - from torpedo propulsion through oil & gas to offshore renewables.

The talk will be preceded by the 2019 AGM introduced by Jason Crouch, Chairman of the Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Area Committee.

The nominations process for election at this AGM are as follows: Submit nominations for all posts to Christian at PortIOWSec@ImecheNearYou.org by 16th Jan. You can still nominate yourself at the AGM itself. We would be delighted for you to vote in person at the AGM, but if you are unable to attend, email votes to Christian PortIOWSec@ImecheNearYou.org by 1200 23rd Jan.

Tea and Coffee will be served. The event is free to attend, please book tickets on Near You so that we know the numbers attending. Members of the IMechE, other Professional Engineering Institutions and all other interested parties are welcome to attend (‘the more the merrier’!). If you have not booked using ‘Near You’ before, you will be given an opportunity to open an account and then make your booking.
