Welcome to the Western Region

During the COVID-19 Lockdown period many of the usual events have been either postponed or cancelled.  We hope to establish a series of virtual events within the Region and signpost those organised by HQ IMechE.  Indeed the move to virtual events by many regions potentially opens up opportunities to participate in more events.

Western Region proudly share many of their events with other Professional Engineering Institutions including Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Institute of Physics (IoP), Nuclear Institute (NI), West of England Metals and Materials Association (WEMMA) and many more

The Region covers the six Areas listed below:

  1. Bath & Bristol
  2. Devon & Cornwall
  3. Devon & Somerset
  4. Gloucester
  5. Swindon
  6. Channel Islands
In addition there is a Young Member Panel centred around Bristol and a special interest Railway Division South West Centre.

Information about events and contacts for each Area or Panel is provided in their respective pages.

The overall programme for the Region aims to provide a mixture of learned society activities including prestige lectures, talks on popular subjects, visits to industrial organisations, aspects of Continuing Professional Development, student prizes and social functions.

With the resumption of a full service, post COVID, we expect to re-instate the monthly newsletter summarising events.  This is followed up by a targeted email advertising each event about 2 weeks before it happens.

Johnathan Milsom - Western Chair
Monika Heaton - Western Secretary

Join the Committee

Committees are Regional and Area level are always looking for volunteers to deliver the exciting programme and services that our members deserve.  The commitment can be as little or as much as your circumstances allow over time so please get involved.  The Regional Committee meets once a quarter and Areas tend to meet once a month.

Committee membership is a great way to improve your networking, demonstrate a commitment to the profession and contribute to your Continuous Professional Development now required to sustain professional registration.

Throughout product development we have access to vast quantities of data, but often design decisions are made without using this data and derived knowledge to show that they are right. Digital twins could provide a structured model based approach to represent the product throughout its lifecycle. Fast feedback of measured data would be used to calibrate the digital twin (integrated set of design models), then ran as a simulation to predict the outcome of any decisions made.
