Welcome to the Western Region
Western Region is a progressive centre of the Institution – one of the largest in the UK with some 8,000 members.
Western Region proudly share many of their events with other Professional Engineering Institutions including Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET), Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS), Institute of Physics (IoP), Nuclear Institute (NI), West of England Metals and Materials Association (WEMMA) and many more.
The Region covers the six Areas listed below:
In addition there is a
Young Member Panel centred in Bristol and Bath.
Information about events and contacts for each Area or Panel is provided in their respective pages.
The overall programme for the Region aims to provide a mixture of learned society activities, including prestige lectures, talks on popular subjects, visits to industrial organisations, aspects of Continuing Professional Development, student prizes and social functions.
Getting Involved
There’s a growing shortage of engineers and engineering technicians in the UK. The Region’s committee sees the need to inspire young people with engineering, to inform them of the work undertaken by professional engineers and engineering technicians, and to encourage them strongly to consider engineering as a career.
To this end we work with local schools and universities in our Areas. We’re looking to further this involvement with schools to make not only pupils but teachers and parents more aware of the roles of professional engineers and engineering technicians and engineering as a career.
If you’d like to be involved in this initiative, or any other of your local Area or Division committee or Young Member Panel activities, then please contact the appropriate committee/panel via their Contact Us details.
Join the Committee
Committees are Regional and Area level, and are always looking for volunteers to deliver the exciting programme and services that our members deserve. The commitment can be as little or as much as your circumstances allow over time, so please get involved.
Committee membership is a great way to improve your networking, demonstrate a commitment to the profession and contribute to your Continuous Professional Development now required to sustain professional registration.

Urbaser - UK Gloucestershire Energy from Waste - Haresfield
Gloucestershire’s new “Energy from Waste” facility is a key element of local waste management. Operational in 2019, it takes waste that would otherwise go to landfill and produces electricity. Its design and operation is of great interest to engineers. The 2-hour visit involves a presentation and a walking-tour of some of the facility. The walking tour takes in the Waste Reception Hall, Waste Bunker, and a view of the waste burning on the grate.
