Welcome to the Western Region

As one of the largest and most dynamic centres of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), the Western Region represents over 8,000 members across a diverse range of industries.

We are committed to fostering professional growth, supporting innovation, and advancing mechanical engineering in the region.

Western Region proudly share many of their events with other Professional Engineering Institutions and academic partners across the South West.

Whether you are a student, early-career engineer, or established professional, the IMechE Western Region offers a vibrant and inclusive community where you can engage with like-minded individuals, gain industry insights, and stay at the forefront of engineering advancements.

The Region covers the six Areas listed below:

In addition there is a Young Member Panel centred in Bristol and Bath.

Information about events and contacts for each Area or Panel is provided in their respective pages.

The overall programme for the Region aims to provide a mix of learned society activities, including prestigious lectures, talks on popular subjects, visits to industrial organisations, Continuing Professional Development opportunities, student prizes, and social functions.

Getting Involved

The UK faces a growing shortage of engineers and technicians, and the Western Region is dedicated to addressing this by inspiring the next generation. We actively work with local schools and universities to raise awareness of engineering careers, not just among students, but also teachers and parents.

If you’re interested in supporting this initiative or participating in Area, Division, or Young Member Panel activities, we welcome your involvement. Volunteering on a committee is a flexible way to contribute to the profession, enhance your networking, and develop your Continuous Professional Development (CPD).

For more information, contact the appropriate committee or panel via our Contact Us page.

Digitalisation is often described as an enabler of sustainability transitions, though concerns about rebound effects remain. To truly support these transitions, however, it must not only foster sustainability elsewhere but also embody it within its own development. This talk explores the future footprint of digital infrastructures, focusing on data centres at the global scale. On the energy side, it projects demand, associated greenhouse gas emissions, and the role of renewable energy.
