Welcome to the Western Region

The Region covers the five Areas listed below:

  1. Bath & Bristol
  2. Devon & Cornwall
  3. Devon & Somerset
  4. Gloucester
  5. Swindon

In addition there is a Young Member Panel centred around Bristol. There are also three Divisional Centres for those with specialist interests in the Aerospace, Automobile and Railway industries.

The overall programme for the Region aims to provide a mixture of learned society activities including prestige lectures, talks on popular subjects, visits to industrial organisations, aspects of Continuing Professional Development, student prizes and social functions.

Details of the programme, typically comprising around 90 events organised by the Region, Areas, Young Member Panel and Divisional Centres, are printed on a single card, which is sent to all our members during September each year via an insert in Professional Engineering.

    Tour of Spirax Sarco’s extensive steam testing laboratory in Cheltenham. This event will give an insight into how is steam generated, distributed, controlled and used; how the condensate is recycled and a basic overview of a steam system.

    Want to enthuse children about engineering? Come and have a go at some fun, engaging design and make projects and find out how the activities can be used to inspire the next generation. and listen to a talk on STEM engagement. Create your own electric fan boats and vibrating brush monsters. Class packs will be available for attendees to conduct the activities in school. This event is supported by the University of the West of England (UWE).

    RNLI Lifeboat Station
    The program will be: Arrive between 18:30 and 19:00 coffee would be available. At 19:00 there would be a brief talk (Circa 20 Minutes or so) about the RNLI, the lifeboat, launch and recovery procedures, maintenance etc. followed by the tour of the facilities and the lifeboats which takes about 40 minutes with a Q&A to follow.

    AGM of the Railway Division South Western Centre. Followed by symposium where David Shirres will explain the scope and limitations of hydrogen trains and Angel Trains will be talking about the case for battery hybrid technology, then the audience will have their chance to debate the issues.
