Cardboard Boat Race 2020

Cardboard Boat Race 2020 – A New Engineering Challenge

Due to ongoing restrictions on organised gatherings, we feel it would be irresponsible to go ahead with the event as we have a duty of care to you, our volunteers, participants and the local community. It would also be unfair to ask volunteers to spend the day either in PPE or potentially at risk without it. We simply can’t run the event safely without the fantastic volunteers who help with event management, run the STEM activity stands and, most importantly, run the safety boat.

In place of the Cardboard Boat Race 2020, we have created a Design and Build at Home Challenge.

View the video below to find out more.

Design and Build at home challenge 2020

With the Cardboard Boat Race cancelled this year we still wanted to bring you a challenge to do at home.

We challenge you to move an egg 1m right, 1m up and 1m back from its original position without touching the egg. You may use any materials to do this but bonus points for using recycled or reused materials.

If you don’t have an egg, use a small potato or stone which is like in size to an egg.

Submit a video showing your creation working and the size of it to our social media, follow us and tag us to enter

Prizes will be awarded for the Most Creative Use of Recycled and Reused Material, Fastest Completion Time, Smoothest Ride

Hints and tips will be shared via our social media channels during the week to make sure to follow them so you don’t miss out!

To enter without using social media, please send a fileshare link to Helen.Timpson@member.imeche.org (e.g. dropbox, WeTransfer etc).

Pre-build teams

We want to recognise the achievements of teams who have prebuilt their boats and all the hard work put into them. There will be a virtual boat parade where we will be able to showcase the boats already built and we will have prizes based on design and fancy dress. If you have not been contacted to send us photos of your designs, please send your three favourite photos of your boat to helen.timpson@member.imeche.org.

As a committee, we are also investigating the possibility of exhibiting the boats. If we do succeed with this, we will be in touch to arrange.

We are sorry to have had to cancel the racing event and we know you were looking forward to it as much as us. We hope that next year’s event will be bigger and better than before with plenty of time to plan for a special second day of racing.
