Cardboard Boat Race

It is with great sadness that unfortunately we will not be running the Cardboard Boat Race for 2024, due to changes in insurance company policies which now prevent ‘open water’ competitions from taking place. We are exploring other opportunities to run the competition or similar familiy engineering competition for 2025. We apologies for any inconveniences.

Cardboard Boat Race 2023

Saturday 16th September 2023, Commercial Wharf, Plymouth.

On the 16th September 2023, the IMechE Committee held the 10th Annual Cardboard Boat Race at Commercial Wharf in Plymouth. 23 teams competed in this years event, with 3 pre-built boats and 20 Build on the Day.

The Build on the Day teams had 3 hours to build a boat before racing it around the harbour. Teams purchased their materials with a limited budget, adding the extra engineering challenge.

Although a very wet day, the event was spectated by hundreds of people.

We'd like to thank all of our sponsors, competitor and the STEM Ambassadors, who help us year on year to create such a wonderful event.

Sponsors: MVV Environment, Babcock, Plymouth Youth Sailing, DS Smith, PPL PRS and Kaefer.
